Barrow Challenged In Supreme Court

In a packed court room today; Hon Ya Kumba Jaiteh a nominated member of the National Assembly challenged the power of the President in the Supreme Court. The President in an unprecedented manner revoked the nomination of Hon Ya Kumba Jaiteh a few days ago and there-by dismissing her as a member of the National Assembly.
A five panel Coram of the Supreme Court of the Gambia; Chaired by the Chief Justice of the Gambia presided over the hearing of Hon. Ya Kumba Jaiteh’s case. Hon Jaiteh a nominated member of the National Assembly who has her nomination recently revoked by the President Barrow for reasons unknown to the General public is challenging her dismissal in the courts. .
After filling a lawsuit at the Supreme Court, and praying for an injunction to the swearing in of a replacement to her nomination, the Court will decide in the next adjourn date. The case is heard in court today Monday 11th March 2019
The State Lawyer Bing D, who is accompanied by N Jallow also another State lawyer represented the Attorney General, told the Court that he received the motion only last Friday, and he therefore pleaded with the Court to give him two days to enable him file his reply.
Lead defense counsel Lawyer Borry Touray called the attention of the Supreme Court, and asked for interim injunction pending the next sitting of the case. Lawyer Touray told the Court that nominated Jaiteh’s replacement (Foday Gassama) is slated for the 18th of March 2019. And if not restrained from swearing the prayer may be over taken by events.
The case at this juncture is adjourned to Thursday the 14th of March 2019 for the hearing of the motion.
Meanwhile the atmosphere outside the court was tense as supporters and sympathizers of Hon Ya Kumba gathered to give moral support and be in solidarity with her.
