BCC REFUTES ALLEGATIONS OF CORRUPTION CIRCULATING ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Mustapha Bachilly the Chief Executive Officer of Banjul City Council on Friday 11th September, 2020, hold a press briefing with regards to allegation attach to his council. The briefing was held at council premises in Banjul.

Banjul City Council has recently come under barrage of corruption and nepotism claims, with Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe accused of being at the hearth of it.

The council has three mandatory committee; finance development and establishment, contracts committee and the local government service commission this commission implies that no council will appoint anyone without the approval of the commission.

The allegation in social media includes a per diem claim and a sum of 1.5 million that the Mayor and the CEO shared leading the CEO purchasing a 4wheel car for his wife who is a parliamentarian, also appointment of some people who are related to the Mayor and put them directly to the job.

Bachilly said the deputy CEO was appointed by the Local government service commission and not by him or the Mayor likewise many others.

The issue of Banjul mini stadium it was alleged the Mayor has an unholy alliance with Ports Authority that led to donation of two compactors. He said two compactors are to help enhancing environmental cleanliness which to him there is nothing wrong with. Bachilly further said the ports wants an annexation of the mini stadium and Muslim high school with their container terminal.

Another allegation also said that the Mayor initiated face mask project while some staff of the council are not paid salary.

Mamud Cham Director of Finance said all salaries are paid and they have no pending salary but acknowledge that sometimes there is delay.

He said it is important for people especial to know how councils functions as institutions as well as come between the people and council

He said for over 20 years this is the first time they have a Mayor who does not interfere in the management of the council.

He said people should desist from such act as this will not the country to anywhere but rather backward.

According to him the people behind it have the assistance of some people about four of them within their system who are disruptive. He said they are not worried with that but how to revamp the council, adding from 2018 to date there has been fast changes on how council is ran  and progress made  in terms of revenue base, output and their relationship with other institution which is fulfil.
