Gambia National broadband Network official launches

The Ministry of Information , Communication and Infrastructure, MOICI, the Management and Board of Directors of GAMTEL in collaboration with the People’s Republic of China and HUAWEI officially launched the Gambia National Broadband Network at Coral Beach Hotel.

The forum brought participants all over the ITC industry alongside signed the national ICT strategic cooperation agreement with Huawei.

Speaking at the launching, Seedy Jaiteh Managing Director of Gamtel expressed that the Gambia national broadband project is the first concessional loan project between Gambia and China in 2017. He said the project was successfully delivered by Gamtel and Huawei team in 18 months of hard work. This was possible only with keen participation of President Adama Barrow and President Xi Jinping.
“Gamtel will launch the G-FIBER series products based on the project to provide gigabit fiber service for home FTTH and enterprises FTTB”. Jaiteh said

Milo Liang President of Huawei Northwest African Region said this project will not only connect government departments, schools, households and other industries, but also create more employment opportunities for the Gambia.

He further stated that it will promote the development of the tourism industry, thus will further develop the Gambia’s GDP.

Chinese Ambassador to Gambia, Ma expressed his impress with the efforts of the government and people of Gambia to promote social development and warmly congratulated them for a new milestone “China and the Gambia are working together towards a new digital era”.

Ambassador Ma introduced China’s intention to build a national broadband project for Gambia since 2017. ICT technology can accelerate social digitalization and is an important infrastructure as well as water and electricity he adduced.

He added; the project will surely open a window for the community and people of the Gambia to observe the world and also provide opportunities for the greater development in the future. He expects that after the project goes live, it can increase the annual revenue of Gamtel by US$13 Million. In addition, he hopes that Huawei will continue to take root in Gambia and provide better ICT technologies for the people of Gambia.

In her official launching statement on behalf of the Gambian leader, the Vice President of the Gambia Dr. Isatou Touray, expressed gratitude to the Chinese people and their President H.E. XI jinping. She added that the President’s first visit to China in 2017 has led to the signing of series of cooperation plans with President XI jinping, and this national broadband is one of the most important cooperation projects.

The national broadband project is very important for the people of Gambia which not only extends the country 400km optical fiber, but also plan an important role of the national development plan. The project succeeded in making up the last mile of the original national optical network.
