A Gambian philanthropist Sarjo Dambelleh, based in new York and a native of Janjanbureh donated equipment worth thousands of dalasi to the department of Social Welfare on through Hon Momodou .S. Ceesay, Tuesday June 25, 2019 held at Social Welfare headquarter in Banjul.
The equipment were presented by the Honorable member for Janjanbureh Momodou Ceesay on behalf Dambelleh who is currently in NY.
Honorable Momodou. S. Ceesay highlighted the importance of mattresses and wheelchairs donated by Dambelleh. He told the gathering that, the said equipment were given to Dambelleh by a hospital to distribute to the needy people of his country. Ceesay told the officials of the Social welfare and other people at the occasion that much was not given because the donors did not know if he (Dambelleh) will distributes the said items or not.
Hon Ceesay thought that the department of Social Welfare is the right department to distribute such equipment as this is the area of their expertise. Ceesay advise that the materials be put into good use, so that Dambelleh can win the support of the donors for more items.
The Director of the Department of Social Welfare Jankaba Jabbi, receiving the donated items on behalf of the needy and the government of the Gambia; said the department is very delighted to receive such valuable items from our own native.
He described this type of donations as handsome, and that the items are very appropriate for the department because it is in line with the department’s objectives. Director Jabbie said it is the responsibility of Social Welfare to take care of people with disability and venerable people in this country. So working with philanthropies like Dambelleh is vital in our system. He said every week one person is must lost one of their legs or arms (amputee), and those amputees needed help all the time.
Sainey Camara, a senior staff at the rehabilitation and technical disability unit said these donated items will be put in the best use and it will also boost the unit’s capacity.
He said they value these gifts and further appeal for more of these kind of wheelchairs and mattresses.
Gabu Jarjue, the head of disability unit department of social welfare thanked Honorable Momodou. S. Ceesay, for being the linked for such items like my colleagues say.
