The Kanifing Magistrates’ Court recently convicted and ordered a 20-year-old pregnant lady with a child to pay a fine of D1500 for stealing a gold chain valued D80, 000.00.
Magistrate Samba Jallow in his ruling ordered Fatou Manneh to pay the sum which was later paid by an unknown person who was not even related to the lady. Manneh was accused of stealing a gold chain valued at D80, 000.00 and on 19 of November 2017 when she went to one Sarjo Jallow seeking for employment as a house maid which was granted to her. According to the police prosecutor, then on 23 of November 2017 when Manneh closed from her normal duties, she went to Jallow’s draw and stole the gold chain. Fatou Manneh was said to have later sold the gold chain valued 80,000.00 for a price of just D5000.00. Jallow then reported the matter to Kotou Police Station prompting officers to launch a search and leading to her arrest on 4th December, 2017. Efforts were made to recover the chain but to no success.
According to the police, it was not the first time that Manneh was prosecuted for such a crime as she reportedly did a similar theft in Bundung. But Manneh denied of having committed a similar offence in the past saying she had never been sentenced or locked in police cell before. However, she pleaded guilty of stealing the gold chain and sold it to one Sheikh at Serekunda Market. She later begged the magistrate to temper justice with mercy because she was from are poor family and was five-month pregnant while breastfeeding one-year-three-month-old baby as well.
