The Turkish Ambassador H.E Ismail Sefa Yuceer, together with Turkish Corporation & Coordination Agency (TIKA) has donated over 200 packages of food items to the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council for onward distribution to the needy families on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.
The ceremony was held on Friday, 24 May 2019 at the Islamic Councils office in Kanifing.
The donated food items include 200 bags of rice, 20 bags of sugar, 20 cartons of dates, 50 cartons of cooking oil, tea bags, pasta, and among others.
The Turkish Ambassador Ismail Sefa Yuceer said the donation demonstrates the existence of long cordial relations between Turkey and the Gambia adding that it also comes at the right time, the holy month of Ramadan.
He said over thousand food items will be also distributed to the needy people in coming days.
He said among other important pillars of Islam is solidarity, cooperation and sharing what we have with the needy people, which he describe as very important.
H.E Yuceer also encourage Muslims to help each other, “as Muslims we should share what we have with the needy people”. He said
He also assured that they will increase their cooperation with the government of the Gambia and the Gambian people.
TIKA’s country representative Mr. Mehmet Akif Eyigun said TIKA is a Turkish government development Agency which provides technical and developmental assistance to the needy countries.
He disclose that the food items donated are around 8 tons which he said is meant for 200 needy families in the country.
He added that TIKA believes in cooperation adding that’s why they collaborate with Islamic Council in other to extend the helping hand to the needy families, “we hope that the donated food items will reach the right beneficiaries” he started.
Imam Sheriff Malick Badjan, the first Vice President of the Supreme Islamic Council, praised the donors for the noble gesture adding that this is not the first time the Gambia is benefitting from the Turkish government because they have a very long relationship, he said.
He also assured the donors that the donated items will be distributed as expected and it will be very beneficial to the needy.
