Honorable Halifa Sallah of Serekunda constituency in a recent statement said the debt burden of this country stands at 77.4 billion dalasi. This he said translates to “every newly born Gambian child carries a debt burden of 38,000 dalasi.” How are we going to solve that problem?”

Honorable Halifa Sallah, the Secretary General and Leader of the People Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), says his party will eradicate poverty in The Gambia.

Halifa made these remarks on Tuesday 27 April 2021, at a press conference organise by PDOIS,s Central Committee under the theme : “RESTRUCTURING PDOIS FOR A JUST AND SMART GOVERNMENT AND BEGINNING THE FINAL BATTLE AGAINST IGNORANCE AND POVERTY”.

Serekunda NAM said, if PDOIS comes to power, they will eradicate poverty by creating cooperative banks out of the sovereign wealth of the land that will be ploughed in our waters and ensure more profits and earn us more foreign exchange.

The veteran politician said PDOIS will engage in import substitution: He added that the country spends 4 billion dalasi in terms rice importation when the country has all the land to be able to cultivate abundant rice.

“We only lack the resources to be able to do that,” Halifa Sallah said. “We have money that we can send to the farming community and give them fertilizer, seeds and farming implements they needed to produce abundant rice for the country.”

Honorable Sallah added the 4billions dalasi that we spend on importing rice can be invested in the country through agriculture that will provide abundant rice without depending on importations. “This is what is called import substitution,” he said.

He said; development is about knowledge but is not about initiation. “Development is about study is not readymade.”

The veteran politician said, his party will do the processing of all the crops that are cultivated in the country if elected on 4 December 2021.

A PDOIS government will ensure that agriculture is empowered in the country. He added the money that the country is using for rice importation will be used on empower farmers to produce more farm products that can sustain our living.
PDOIS boss said, if Gambians want to end poverty in this country, government must invest on agriculture. “We have the flat land and the fresh water that can generate income for this country,” he noted.
