Barrow’s Victory Challenge in the Supreme Courts

By Almamo Kamaso

The United Democratic Party of The Gambia did file an election petition to the Gambia’s Supreme Court, a moment ago (today) against the recently concluded presidential elections in The Gambia, in which President Adama Barrow had declared he would win by force and was declared winner by the country’s Independent Electoral Commission. Reliable sources close to the leadership told Daily News.

The case comes barely less than ten days after Barrow was declared winner. The Leader and flag bearer of the UDP , lawyer Abubacar Darboe was quick to rejects the results on December 5th and told his militants that, the party will investigate and the results of the investigation will determine the next line of action. Darboe advised UDP supporters to keep the peace and stay calm as the party will communicate to them of their findings.

The UDP’s grounds will challenge the fairness of that election in light of myriads of corrupt malpractices identified by evidence gathered by the party against the ruling NPP and the Independent Electoral Commission.

It will be a landmark case, which will hopefully lay the foundation for fairer presidential elections in The Gambia and provide ethical guidance for achieving the same from henceforth. It will further hopefully consider and recommend the expected etiquettes of the Independent Electoral Commission to ensure fairer conduct of such elections in the future, which will undoubtedly imbued public confidence in the IEC from its currently battered reputation!!
