Finance Disburse 126 Million to IEC

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the body responsible for conducting elections in the Gambia did requested for funds amounting one hundred and twenty six million dalasi for the conduct of elections, ranging from registration and preparatory stages of our elections.
Giving over view of the 2021 Election Bill which is before joint committees of Regional government , IEC and Ombudsman; and that of the Human Right and Constitutional Matters, Monday 26th April 2021, the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Hon Mam-Bureh Njie told members that his ministry has disbursed the whole sum.
When the Finance minister was pushed to give a breakdown of the D126 Million, he said D74million was disbursed for voter registrations and D52 million is meant for preparatory elections.
The minister of Finance raise concerns over two sections of the Elections Bills; section 14, which talks of diaspora registration and that of section 87 sub-section 14 , which talk of duty waiver for political parties as election materials.
As for the diaspora registration and voting, Minister Njie said unless there is a Supplementary Appropriation Bill as the diaspora registration and voting is budgeted for; however the minister was quick to correct that as they are not mandated to look at the IEC budget he has no idea if the IEC has enough money to carry out the above activities or not.
