Since The Gambia reported its first case of Covid-19, TİKA Banjul Office has been closely monitoring the situation with the objective of coming up with the right response projects. So far, TIKA Banjul Office has implemented three projects from May 2020 to date and the face mask project is the fourth one all geared towards complementing the efforts of the government of The Gambia in its fight against the Covid-19 Pandemic.
This project entails the production of 20,000 washable and reusable face masks in collaboration with ABM CovidGambia. ABM CovidGambia is an NGO which came up with an initiative called Mask for all with the objective of supporting the effort of the Gambia Government in the fight against Covid-19. Twenty young tailors have been recruited by ABM CovidGambia to sew face mask at a skill center in Serrekunda. A very important component of this project is the creation of employment to young tailors in The Gambia.
TIKA provided the raw materials for the production of 20,000 washable and reusable face masks to be distributed in The Gambia by TIKA Banjul Office in partnership with the Municipal and Area Councils.
The distribution of the locally produced washable and reusable face masks will kick off with a presentation ceremony to be held at TIKA Banjul Office in Tranquil on Friday 28th August, 2020. At the ceremony a total of 7,500 face masks will be handed over to five area councils as shown in the table below:
