Jollof Town of Banjul is the first team to win the first ever Beach Tournament final after defeating New Town East Ward 1-0 to left the Trophy. The final was played at the Banjul Beach on Sunday evening.
The Tournament was organized by the City Link Ostend-Banjul Project Team for sustainable development, funded by the European Union.
The main aims and objectives of the Beach Tournament is to engage and increase the entire project sensitisation, especially, the greening component which is now a success project.
It was a perfect starting for both teams in the early minutes of the first quarter of the game but both were unable to capitalize on their chances.
After a slow start from New Town East Ward just after the second quarter of the game, Jollof Town able to score the only goal through their no. 3. The game ended 1-0 I favor of Jollof Town.
The Lord Mayor of Banjul City Council, Rohey Malick Lowe centerd the final between the two clubs in Banjul.
Speaking at the final, Mayor Lowe highlights the importance of the tournament, “the important of the Beach Tournament is to bring life back to Banjul and of course to bring unity among the people of Banjul. Sports is Unity and can bring people together as one” she said
She added that “I Love sports because I use to be sportswoman and I am much more interested in athletics because I was an athlete” she said
Speaking about the City Link Ostend-Banjul Project, she said “about 3 years ago my slogan was woman and youth empowermen, this is what we are trying to manifest. However the European Union came to offer their support through the sister link Ostend” she explained
The Project, she said is to empower the citizens of Banjul, adding the waste management, health and transforming of Banjul is a top priority of the project.
She concluded by thanking all the relevant stakeholders for participating in such a laudable initiative.
10 teams from all the 9 Wards of the City have competed in the beach football tournament but the winner (Jolof Town Ward) went home with D15,000.00 cash whilst the first runner up (New Town East Ward received D10,000.00 cash and the two semi-finalist received D2;000.00 each but all the rest of the teams received D1000.00 cash.
