KMC Commences Disaster Mitigation Exercise

Kanifing Municipal Council on Saturday 21st May 2022 commenced disaster mitigation exercises aimed at preventing flash flooding within the Kanifing Municipality during the rainy season in other to protect the lives and livelihoods of its residents.

The exercise includes drainage cleaning, canal excavation, clearing of illegal dumps and sand removal along the highway.

This is an annual event normally conducted by the Council ahead of the rainy season.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council, Binta Janneh Jallow said the importance of the exercise cannot be over emphasis considering the fact that drainage cleaning and sand clearing on the highways will reduce flooding within KM. “The importance of the exercise is to reduce flooding in the KM” she said

She further call on the members of the communities to take ownership of the exercise while saying that the council cannot do it all.

Director of Services, Lamin Sanyang said the drainage cleaning exercise is part of the yearly activity plan of the council adding that this year they are going to clean 39 drainage within the Kanifing Municipality.

‘‘As a council we want to ensure that we removed all the sands along the major highways, so that the vehicle and people can easily pass through so that there will be no flash flooding and blockage along the highway’’ he said.

He further said the exercise is geared towards mitigating flash flooding within Kanifing Municipality during the rainy season.

“You will realized that when started this drainage cleaning exercises the past years. The number of disaster incident has has reduce. And the significance of of the exercise is to mitigate flooding within Kanifing Municipality” he said

On his Lamin Dibba, Committee Chairman for the Environment and Sanitation spoke on the importance of change of attitude towards the environment.

Councilor Dibba said the drainage are not for littering while saying that the people should change their attitudes.

“If the people have not change their attitudes, no matter what we do. They will continue doing the same thin. That’s why we have to embark on a massive sensitization to make sure people change their attitudes towards the environment” he said.

Dibba said then the people of Kanifing Municipality has encountered lot of flooding over the pass years adding that with coming of the drainage cleaning and sand clearing initiative flooding has reduced.
