The National Assembly Member for Niamina East Constituency , Honorable Omar Ceesay, has Task the Gambia Government to Re-open Provincial markets (Lumos) for the farmers to sell their products.
Speaking on a debate on state of the Nation Address delivered by His Excellency President Adama Barrow recently, Honorable Ceesay lamented on the plight of the local farmers and the entrance of the Senegalese across the borders to buy farm products at a very cheap price he lamented.
“They said the borders are closed, yet we continue seeing the Senegalese coming into the country and we all know about these things”, said Hon Omar Ceesay.
Honorable said: “the Senegalese are buying these products or commodities at very cheap prices. Is this the how we want to empower our farmers?” he asked.
The Niamina East MP tasked the Government to take charge of the borders and re-open the provincial markets (Lumos) so that the farmers can sell their products at better prices. “That is the only the way farmers can see the values of their hard work”, he remarked.
Honorable Ceesay also raised concern about the impact of COVID-19 on farmers some of whom have sold things that they could have used during this season. This is not possible and were left to individuate resources as a result. He added that the little products left with the farmers are perishable goods that could not wait for the trade season he ended.
