Over 150 Arrests Made as Police Tackle Crime

The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has since set up an Operation Zero Crimes under the able leadership of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Abdoulie Sanyang; which efforts are commendable. However one may be tempted to ask , if this is not just a matter for nomenclature or what?
The crime rate of the Gambia in the recent times is just very terrible, costing the state lives and properties. Properties in millions of dalasi as many government building were destroyed in the process and many of privates properties. Anytime we found ourselves in such situations the Gambia Police Force comes out with something to curb and managed the situation.
In the past we have seen the creations of the following: Operation Bulldozer, Anti-Crime and now Operation Zero Crime, will we really see and a difference in crime management and control? All the above mention Operations were set up with good intent and the objective is among other to curb crime and criminality.
What is clear to the Gambian population is that many of the Operation teams are composed of police, Army, Immigrations and other security branches. Is it not just playing with nomenclatures? Or are we really going to see another set of security apparatus just in name but in real operations no differences from the previous Operations?
However since the coming into operations of the new team (Operation Zero Crime) over a 150 people are arrested, and seizures of weapons including knives and other types of weapons were made. The seizures also included monies amounting to D150, 000 said to have being stolen from the Sanyang fish meals. This achievement is commendable and we say bravo to the Gambia Police Force.
However we must express our concerns that the new Operation must act differently to curb crime and criminality. The team should be guided with respect for the people rights. Always the police should be guided or informed that suspect’s remains innocent until found guilty by a competent court.
Once again we commend the police high command for coming up with the new operations and only hope it would not be a mere duplication of efforts as one wonders what will be comes of the Anti-Crime unit of the police.
