Within a very short period of time, the Barrow government received two important resignations, first it was the National Coordinator responsible for the coordination of the COVID-19 activities in the person of Alasan Senhgore who until his appointment by the President was the Secretary General of the Gambia Red Cross Society. Senghore had serve the International Red Cross Society at the highest level on the continent of Africa, before coming home recently.
President Barrow recently appointed Senghore less than three months. He resigns sometimes last week, but did not state any reason for his resignation other than on personal grounds.
The second resignation is a very high profiles one, who is no other person but the Justice Minister Ba Tambedou, who was the first Justice Minister since the fall of the Jammeh regime. Justice Minister Tambedou was on record for tendering his resignation while ago, when the president’s office was at Fajara, but the President did not accept that resignation. Like Senghore , Tambedou also did not give any reason or reasons but said it was on personal grounds.
No reasons were advanced in both resignations other than personal grounds but what that personal grounds means can only tantamount to dissatisfaction.
These resignations happened when the sacking of the National Youth Executive, Lamin Darboe was announced with no reasons advanced by the government for his sacking. That also cast doubts in the minds of the citizens.
Resignations are not good sign for any government, most of the times resignations are signs of lack of confidence in a particular government. In our case we are yet to establish that. On the other side when governments also keep sacking then, that is another sign that government lacks confidence in the officials’ sacked. If the two are frequent then, there is a problem of trust on both sides.
When Jammeh’s government was falling, lack of confidence on both sides of the equation was evident and thus his government fell. Government ministers started abandoning their positions’ whiles government on the other hand were hurriedly appointing ministers and some of the newly appointed ministers only served less than a month.
Is that the case with the Barrow government? Let’s wait and see
The Daily News wishes to bid the outgoing Justice Minister farewell and wish him well in whatever engagement he is going to undertake soon or later. We want to commend him for putting public trust in our judicial system and effecting some reforms and the result of some of which has allowed a lot of press freedom. He is also on record for the establishments of some very important key Commissions such as the National Human Rights Commission, the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparation Commission and above all the Constitutional reforms Commission who have just presented the final draft of the 2020 Constitution.
The new Justice Minister is welcomed and hope he will be able to finish some of the work started by his predecessor.
