Ten Days Women Communication & Leadership Workshop Training Underway in Banjul

Women from eight (8) countries across Africa under the banner of We Are The Solution in collaboration with Catalunya and the Gambia Foundation (CGF) commenced a ten Days training workshop on Communication, Organizational Management and women Leadership.

The training which started on 15th of November, 2021 at the Paradise Suits Hotel is targeting women country coordinators from the following countries: Burkina Faso, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mali and Senegal. The training is expected to end 27th November, 2021.

The objective of the convergence is to promote good agricultural practices and knowledge known and transmitted for generation that have long preserved food sovereignty on the continent and to promote family farming through agro-ecology.

The We Are the Solution (WAS) Movement was launched in 2011 by 12 rural women’s organizations from eight countries under the aegis of their respective leaders.

Since then, more than 500 Rural Women Associations (RWAs) have joined the movement which has 175,000 members and supporters across West Africa.

Catalunya and The Foundation is a voluntary base organization empowering women with innovative social and humanitarian solution to one seasonal rain fed Agriculture and gardening in our local community

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chairwoman of We Are The Solution, Mariama SONKO mentioned that in Africa, family farming occupies a central place in food production and constitutes the economy of about 70% of population.

She highlighted why they are the solution adding that family farming provides most of the cash crops, but the farmers who create this have little access to land and production resources.

“Despite these difficulties, rural family farms have maintained or even improved food production through effective adaptation and diversification strategies” she said

According to SONKO We Are The Solution movement was set up to promote the voice of peasants in agricultural governance at the local, national and continental levels.

The Chairwomen added that agro product is very important and can help in the development of women organization.

“We are not just here to talk about the organization but also to create awareness and to help the women coordinators in communication, organizational management and leadership” she said

Nene Touray Director at the Directorate of Gender Equality and Women Empowerment has stressed that no development can take place without the involvement of women.

“Skill transfer is very vital in the networking between women organization” she said

She said women participation in the Agro business is very important while calling women to join the association.

On her part the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fatou Jammeh Touray said they are aware that agriculture in the Gambia is facing lot of challenges adding it is evidence that the impact of COVID-19 has also disturb the women at large especially women in the rural areas.

Also speaking, the Pubic Relation Officer of the Kanifing Municipal Council, Muhammed Sandeng highlighted the councils commitment in advancing the youth and women programs adding that KMC has an open door policy and they are ready to partner with any women organization
